It’s amazing what a lower, more aggressive front bumper with a splitter and a huge grille together with a large wing at the back can do to the appearance of an American muscle car.
All of a sudden, it stops looking like a hooligan and morphs into a bonafide athlete. And that’s not in the least deceiving: the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R is ready for racing, being built to meet international GT4 regulations.
That means the race car will go against the likes of Ford, Porsche or even McLaren, but having already scored wins in the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge GTS championship and the 2017 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series, any debut nerves should be long gone by now.
Apart from the visual enhancements (which are actually driven by aerodynamics), the Camaro GT4.R also has a series of mechanical customizations. For one thing, the dry-sump 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine may have been sourced from the SS model, but it bears little to no resemblance.
The naturally-aspirated power unit received a custom carbon fiber intake, a custom camshaft, and a custom Bosch Motorsport MS6 ECU, all able to raise the output to 480 hp. With a minimum weight of 3,131 pounds (1,420 kg) obtained through stripping down the car and the use of carbon fiber, there’s no question the GT4.R is a totally different beast than the road-going version.
The Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission sending the power to the rear wheels where a limited-slip differential makes the most of it helps with that sentiment as well, as do the Brembo brakes and Ohlins adjustable coilovers.
Chevrolet has now made the race-spec GT4.R available to the public, but all that goodness has to come at a price. It starts at $249,000, but we have no doubt it’ll make every new owner feel like it was worth every penny after the first lap on their favorite track. Plus they get to look at it every time they want to, which is enough in itself.
